This link will provide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qRtPK-8J7k a brief overview of what a manager does and the main traits a good manager should carry. I think this a good video to see if you have very little knowledge in the area of management. In other words, this video will help you get an idea of what management consists of. Also, if you look at the image above, you will see what a manager is expected to do and have.
A skill that a manager must have is Technical skills. The manager should be proficient at performing specific tasks, which helps provide the credibility or knowledge to convince
people that he is capable of doing certain things. These things can consist of building a bridge, an airplane or even a ship. Being updated on the latest technology will better help you understand different ways of performing these tasks. Employees won't really rely or trust a manager that has no idea on technology. Having good management skills along with technical skills, will almost make you irreplaceable. A company looks for someone like this because you represent them. You could even get a good bonus just by having technological skills. Therefore, prove to your employees and bosses that you know how to manage and at the same time, know how to help them produce good work. Another skill a manager should have is People Skill. This is probably one of the most important skills. A good manager knows how to talk to, treat and respect an employee. If a manager can demonstrate that he or she can be trusted and reliable, employees will be more dedicated to what they do and they will most likely show you, the manager, respect and liability. Doing so, will also provide a good work force for the company which leads to good reputation and profit. Employees are the base of a company and provide the strength needed to keep it going, but this can only function with a good manager with good peoples' skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy8wSigZK-o
A good manager also thinks strategic. He or She should most of the time be able to come up with a good plan that will lead to efficiency and help resolve any conflicts that the company comes up against. Good managing of the employees and the work that each group of employees need to do, should be part of a manager's strategic planning. It is not easy, but it can be done. As a manger of a company or group of employees, smart thinking and planning is the key into being successful. This video might be a helpful hand in acquiring this skill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL0OK1nFXiY
As a manager you are always expressing your ideas or thoughts. This a an important skill, but a skill that equals the importance of thinking strategic is, listening. Listening to what others have to say opens up your mind to more efficient ideas and an even increase respect from others and trust. Some managers often get so carried away giving orders or telling people what they can or not do and never even bother to listen. This way you will be more informed on what is going on in the business which makes you become a better manager. You can achieve this and more with the basic skill of listening. http://www.skillsyouneed.com/ips/listening-skills.html
Even though being a nice or lenient is loved by employees, sometimes as a manger you need to show that you have authority and that they can't just expect you to let them off easy every time. You must display and represent leadership in a company. Leadership not only shows authority, it also helps in leading people that way you want to go. You can say that it works as a factor of persuasion because in order to get employees to do what you want them to do, you are going to have to persuade them to while keeping the role of authority and leadership. Here is a link to a short video on leadership: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiG1LNbfbqM
Once in a while obstacles or problems are going to develop and are going to get in the way of the employees and the company. As a manager you need to be able to eliminate these problems so your employees can do their work and not be disturbed or interrupted. Production is usually the first thing to take a hit when an obstacle is in the way so it is up to you as the manager to find a solution to remove it. It is not an easy thing to do, but it can be done. Just be patient, relax and think thoroughly of the actions you must take to make sure that issue goes away and doesn't come back. Problem-solving and patience are the key roles here. Don't hesitate to ask for help either; just because you are a manager it doesn't mean you don't need help. If you have an idea maybe input from someone else can help solve the problem and prevent further headaches. This short video shows a basic and easy way to understand and practice problem solving skills in the workplace.
